Another gig! I’ll be playing the first official zeal gig of the year next wednesdayThursday the 24th at 303 supporting Sydney’s Karoshi. The new audio visual set’s really coming together after last weeks trial run and it should be even better by next wednesday. I’m also scheming some evil live streaming schemes so all of you in internet land can check out the shiny new moving pictures and sounds… more gigs coming. and videos and things. oh, the unbearable intrigue.
i’m playing this saturday night at the empress with JUNK! and the time shield – and this time not as zeal but as my VJing alter ego lazy laser. i’ll be trailing some new AV material (using VIZZable) and it will be under rehearsed but hopefully interesting. it should be a taste of the future zeal live show. the inimitable junk will be doing some stripped down acoustic or ambient or jazzy versions of their songs and time shield will be there to shield us from the horrors of time (and also make pretty pictures and sounds). back to getting my shit together!
a former melbournite, now osakian commarade of mine, Kid Transistor, has just released an EP of collaborations called “+ others”. the first jam on said EP features me singing stuff and shredding some sick axe. stream and/or download why don’t you? it’s free because the internet says so. http://www.kidtransistor.com/
My good friend Subsketch has started a podcast and this week it features me talking about all things Zeal thusfar. He’s done some tricky editing to make me say things i never really said… check it out Y’all! Oh yeah! Give me that podcast!
While you’re at it, check out all things Subsketch. He makes tremendous stuff. It is worthy of your attention.
peeps have been quick to jump on my new little max4live project Vizzable which has been great.
I put together a quick live set to take this audiovisual automobile for a test drive:
this is going to be the format of the new Zeal live set except expect some acoustic guitar, live sampling and words that sound nice but don’t mean much.
there goes 2010. zeal relocated to melbourne and good things happened! starting with what’s happening right now and working back… i’m currently in adelaide where i’m set up in a bunker, recording new songs for some sort of ep early in the new year.
My album is ranked third on a whothehell.net ”list”. It’s the second time i’ve ever been on a list and it’s still fun.
Last week my song “clouds” made a top songs of 2010 podcast on polaroids of androids. it was the first time i’d ever been on a list and it was fun.
i played alot of shows this year, all of which had secret words, many of which i can’t remember. some were:
it’s the first time i’ve played either of these venues. also, i might whip out a VJ set at the toff gig…
there’ll be one more show in Radelaide before the year is up but i’ll post about that later. until then, enjoy a preview of colourful things in the works…
I’m supporting Parallel Lions next Thursday, November 18 at the Builders Arms. This is a really exciting gig for me, Parallel Lions features Ollie from Art of Fighting who are high on my list of favourite bands ever. And actually, I stole some AoF lyrics and used them as a reoccurring theme in my last album. If you can figure out what that lyrical snippet is email me or leave a comment you’ll win a CD copy of my album. And I’ll be very impressed.
Also, go listen to the Parallel Lions record ’cause it’s really great.
Working on some new visual material at the moment too, hopefully will have the Zeal live A/V set up and running for next year.
The pretty colours are provided by a Novation Launchpad which is sequenced/animated in Ableton Live. This track and the rest of the album are still free. Go get it.
UPDATE:
I’ve uploaded the MIDI file used to run the clip. If you have a Launchpad and want to see the clip in glorious real life download this MIDI file and play it in your DAW of choice with the Launchpad selected as your MIDI output.
I’ve returned from This Is Not Art all energised and inspired. More recording at the end of the year and more touring are the wildebeest in my crosshairs but there are some other vermin to knock off beforehand:
I’m working on a few new music videos as well – first up’s Vigilante which will be a MIDI sequenced animation and then Wasps which will be some sort of warp speed slide show. Also, if you get a chance, go see 10k Free Men and Their Families. He was awesome at TINA. Exhibit A:
Zeal is 27 year-old Melbournite, Robert Jarvis. He makes anticon-esque indie-pop-tronica, animated music videos about cats in space and software that enables you to do all sorts of stuff.
